ecu.test drive

Introduction

ecu.test drive is a web application optimized for performing interactive test cases on mobile devices. The user interface is optimized for touch control. Nevertheless, it can be used in a browser on a PC as well.

System requirements

  1. Data connection between PC and mobile device (tethering)

  2. Mobile OS: Android, version 4.4 or higher recommended

  3. Browser: Google Chrome version 57 or higher recommended

The web app can be used in most browsers, independent of the operating system. However, it is currently optimized for Chrome on Android or Windows.

Features

  • Display and start of open test cases (Packages, Projects)

  • Display of package descriptions including images. These can be integrated via <img src=”path/to/image”/>.

  • Selection of project components to be executed (as described in Selective Testing)

  • Visualization and interaction with interactive test steps during execution

  • Voice output

Available on Android and Microsoft Windows:

  • Acoustic signals for exceeded upper or lower limits (see Optional setup)

Available on Android 4.4 or newer with Chrome 57 or newer:

  • Bluetooth connection with multimedia remote controls or the vehicle entertainment system

    • Interaction with the test case using multimedia controls in the vehicle

    • Showing instructions in the entertainment system of the vehicle

First Steps

Establishing a connection

First it is necessary to establish a connection between the mobile device (smartphone or tablet) and the PC running ecu.test. These are the main options to do that:

  1. Same Wi-Fi network: Use the same Wi-Fi network for the mobile device and the PC. (Hint: the Wi-Fi could be provided using a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot device.)

  2. Wi-Fi hotspot: Create a mobile hotspot using the mobile device and connect the PC to it. This is only supported using Android.

  3. USB: Connect the PC and the mobile device via USB and enable “USB tethering” on the mobile device.

  4. Bluetooth: Connect the PC and the mobile device via Bluetooth and enable “Bluetooth tethering” on the mobile device.

Info

As soon as a client is connected to ecu.test, the speech synthesis for interactive test execution is automatically deactivated within ecu.test. Only the clients will provide a speech output. The speech synthesis will be reactivated as soon as all clients close their connection to ecu.test (e.g. by closing the browser).

Setup the web app

  1. Initially it is recommended to set a password. It can be defined in ecu.test under Options –> Settings –> Workspace Settings –> ecu.test drive.

  2. Thereafter the ecu.test drive server has to be started. To do so, click on the ecu.test drive icon in the status bar of ecu.test. In the dialog that opens, select “Start server”. In case a Windows Security Alert is raised by the Windows Firewall, select “Allow access”. This may require administrative privileges.

  3. Now the web app can be opened on the mobile device. To do so, either enter the displayed URL or scan the QR code.

  4. In ecu.test, close the dialog and open the packages and projects which shall be executed. The packages and projects automatically appear in the web app and can be executed interactively using the mobile device.

Troubleshooting

  • The web app is accessible on the PC, but not on the mobile device.

    • Ensure that the PC and the mobile device are connected to the same network.

    • On the PC, ensure that the network is classified as “Work Network” or “Home Network” and not as “Public Network”.

    • On the PC, ensure that the firewall is configured so that incoming connections on TCP port 8999 and the configured HTTP port are accepted.

  • In the web app, the message “Can not establish connection to ecu.test” appears.

    • Ensure that the ecu.test drive server is started.

    • If the error message is still present, shut down ecu.test on the PC and the browser on the mobile device and retry after two minutes.

Optional setup

Add to Homescreen

ecu.test drive can be added to the homescreen. It will then always be launched in full screen mode and without browser elements.

The web page can be added to home screen using the browser menu (Chrome / Android) or the share menu (Safari / iOS).

Choose voice for speech output

By default the speech output in ecu.test drive uses the language that is currently set in ecu.test. To read out test cases that were composed in another language a different speaker can be configured in ecu.test drive. Open the settings and go to the field Speech language. There you can pick the code of your preferred language, e.g. ‘de-DE’ for German or ‘es-ES’ for Spanish. Which languages are available depends on the browser in use.

Acoustic signals

Calculation steps and Multi-Check test steps with activated time options provide the possibility to show the undershooting/overshooting and reaching of the desired value range by means of acoustic signals. For this purpose, the field Acoustic signals in settings must be activated. During test case execution, the option can also be activated via the loudspeaker symbol in the upper left corner of the screen.

The acoustic signals are played as follows:

  • Calculation with time options

    • Falling below the value range: low tone in 1s interval

    • Exceeding the value range: high tone in 0.7s interval

    • Within the value range: continuous tone

  • Multi-Check with time option “fulfilled for all test steps”

    • At least one child test step outside the value range: tone in the interval

    • All child test steps within the value range: continuous tone

  • Multi-Check with time option “at least one test step”

    • All child test steps outside the value range: tone in interval

    • At least one child test step within the value range: continuous tone
