Default recording configuration
The Default recording configuration is an execution setting of the
test configuration. It can be used to centrally define recording-related settings for test
execution instead of repeating them in each package.
For better differentiation, the following terms are defined:
Default recording package: This package is part of the default recording configuration.
Contents from the Signal recordings tab are taken into account.
Test case package: The specific package that implements a test case for which recordings
shall be created.
The default recording package is a regular package specified in the
test configuration.
Signal groups and signals defined in this package are automatically used in
test case packages. Whether a signal group, one of its settings, or other settings such as
trace merge are used depends on a number of rules:
Use case 1: Recording on demand
If no suitable group is found in a package for signals from
Signal group “Assign automatically”
or via Record all test quantities, suitable groups are adopted from
the default recording configuration.
Use case 2: Always record everything
If all groups and signals from the default recording package are to be transferred to
the test case package, you can enable the TCF option Always use signal groups and signals in test case packages and stimulation package steps.
This requires the test case package to be used as a stimulation package in a project or the test case flag (a property of the package) to be set.
Signal recordings tab
In the signal recordings tab, elements automatically imported from default groups are displayed
by default, but can also be hidden. For details, see
Creating signal groups and recording groups.
Furthermore, the behavior when adding signals via drag-and-drop changes if a suitable default
signal group exists in the loaded test configuration with the Default recording package:
A new signal group is not automatically created; instead, the signal is added
to the Assign Automatically group.
Feature table
The following table describes specific settings of the default recording package in more
detail.
Feature overview and restrictions
Feature |
Description |
Signal groups |
A signal group in the default recording package should have only one recording
group.
Default signal groups are adopted at runtime as complete signal groups together with
their recording groups if they are needed for automatic assignment or if the TCF option
Always use signal groups and signals in test case packages and stimulation package steps
is enabled.
If the test case package already contains a signal group with the same name, no second
signal group is created.
|
Signals in signal groups |
If the test case package already contains a signal group with the same name, missing
signals from the default group are added.
Locally existing signals remain unchanged. If there is a naming conflict with a
different mapping target, adopted signals are renamed automatically; this renaming is
also taken into account when synchronizations are adopted.
A measurement list of the default group is used if the local group does not have its
own measurement list.
|
Recording group settings |
Settings of recording groups are generally not merged into local recording groups
with the same name. They only apply if the corresponding default signal group is
adopted as a complete group; in that case, the recording groups of the
Default Recording Package are copied.
Exception: The name template of a local recording group is adopted from the
Default Recording Package if at least one default recording group exists for the
local signal group with the same name and no explicit name template is set in the
local recording group.
Only the name template of the first matching default recording group is considered.
Locally defined name templates are not overwritten.
Pay explicit attention to recording control. Either use Start/Stop Trace
test steps in the test case package or use auto-start/stop on the recording groups.
This setting must be maintained consistently in the Test Case Package and the
Default Recording Package.
|
Assign automatically group |
Signals from the Assign automatically group of the test case package take
signal groups of the test case package and of the default recording package into
account. If the assignment is ambiguous or impossible, the signal is not assigned
automatically.
The Assign automatically group of the default recording package is not
supported yet.
|
Record all test quantities |
|
Synchronization |
If an active synchronization is configured in the test case package, its basic
configuration remains authoritative; synchronizations from the default recording package
are additionally adopted only if the participating recording groups are
available at runtime. Dependency chains are resolved automatically, so both packages
do not necessarily need to configure the same recording group as master. It is only
important that a linear dependency graph can be derived for both packages via a shared
recording group.
If no local synchronization exists, the basic settings of the default configuration
are adopted.
|
Trace merge |
|
Package variables |
The default recording package must not contain package variables marked for
recording. Likewise, the synchronization configured there must not use package
variables.
If one of these conditions is violated, the default recording package is discarded
entirely and not applied. Other uses of variables, for example in the path of the
trace merge, are valid and do not prevent the use of the default recording package.

Example overview
Detailed examples can be found on a dedicated subpage. That page describes typical usage
scenarios including initial situation, configuration, runtime behavior, and recommendation.
The examples address the following topics in particular:
automatic assignment without a matching local signal group
extending a local signal group with the same name
adopting synchronizations from the default recording package
always recording a few signals
always recording many signals
