PrerequisitesΒΆ

To use the debugger in ecu.test, it is necessary to install a GDB version >= 6.0. In order to access variables using the read and write test steps via the Debugging tab, the executable must contain debug symbols in DWARF format (e.g. by compiling with gcc -g).

The debugger can be used locally and via SSH, additionally it is possible to connect to a GDB server.

Attach job of the DEBUGGER-SSH port on Linux targetsΒΆ

When using the Attach job on a Linux target, the error ptrace: Operation not permitted might occur. This is caused by a too restrictive setting of the kernel.yama.ptrace_scope kernel parameter.

Background information and a description of the possible values is available in the Linux kernel documentation.

The following command (requires root permission, or CAP_SYS_PTRACE) will change this parameter so that the debugger may attach to all processes of the same user ID:

sysctl -w kernel.yama.ptrace_scope=0

To ensure this setting is adjusted upon each system startup, most linux distributions allow creating an entry for this parameter (or adjusting an existing) entry in /etc/sysctl.conf or one of the *.conf files in the /etc/sysctl.d/ directory. For details see the documentation of the used linux distribution, under the keywords sysctl.conf, sysctl.d or sysctl.
